Located in the Himalayan foothills beside the Ganga River, Rishikesh is both sacred and lively. It has long been a center for yoga, meditation, and spirituality. Saints and gurus have lived here for centuries, and today it’s also a favorite spot for young travelers, yoga practitioners, and adventure seekers.
The town is divided by the Ganga into two main areas:
Swarg Ashram and Laxman Jhula side (quieter, more spiritual, lots of ashrams)
Ram Jhula and market side (more cafes, shops, and tourist activity)
Rishikesh is alcohol-free and vegetarian by law, which gives it a cleaner, calmer vibe than many other Indian towns.
Rishikesh is deeply tied to Indian mythology. It's believed that Lord Rama did penance here for killing Ravana, and Lakshman crossed the river at what is now Laxman Jhula using a jute rope bridge.
Over the years, the town became known for its ashrams and spiritual teachings. In the 1960s, The Beatles famously stayed at the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram, which brought global attention to Rishikesh as a yoga destination.
Today, it continues to attract seekers from around the world — from serious yoga students to casual visitors looking for a meaningful break.
